Your Toilet is Old
This is probably the most common reason to consider getting a new toilet. If you’ve been using the same toilet for decades, you should probably consider replacing it, even if it’s currently working fine. Older toilets are inefficient and could be contributing to high water bills. A federal law was enacted in 1994 that declares residential flush tank toils made and sold in the U.S. may use no more than 1.6 gallons per flush. Many new models use even less. If your toilet hasn’t been replaced since 1994 or earlier, upgrading to a new one could actually be a big money saver.
The Tank is Cracked
If you’re regularly noticing a puddle of water around the base of your toilet, it could be a sign of a much bigger problem than a simple leak. You could have cracks in your tank, and that is a problem that calls for a new toilet. If your toilet is working as it should, there could also be cracks in the bowl.
It Needs Fixed Frequently
Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or you’ve called in a plumber for assistance, if your toilet has needed to be repaired several times in the past few years, it’s probably time for an upgrade. Even when you’re tackling the projects yourself, the cost of plumbing repairs can really add up, and getting a new toilet may be the more cost-effective option.

There isn’t anything technically wrong with a round bowl, but there are definitely reasons to switch to a toilet with an elongated bowl. In addition to being more comfortable, they stay cleaner and allow fewer odors to escape. Toilets with elongated bowls do take up a little more room, but they are definitely worthwhile if you have the space for one.
